History without philosophy
History
without philosophy is only a screen on which to project the shibboleths
of our time. Thinking must first emancipate itself from the Cartesian
myth--the ontological presupposition of the Cartesian self and its
associated rhetorical elements of consciousness, belief, motive,
ideology, and interest. Failure to do so has the effect, a
priori, of blocking conceptualization of questions of ontology, agency,
intentionality, habitus, action networks and networks of power, and
context.
This site began as an attempt to advance an analysis of the historical
trajectory: the New Deal to Donald Trump, but the events of the second
decade of the 21st century, when viewed through the lens provided by The Social Origins of Language, forced me to see that there was a bigger picture. This bigger picture is represented by Figure 0. From the Origins of Language to the End of Print Literacy in the United States.
"Trump"
forces us to face the question of our primate heritage (and its
corrolary, patrimonialism), on the one hand, and the fragility of
print-based civilization, on the other.
Taking into account
the major perspectives on the development of
language and cognition, and applying these results and methodologies to
the cognitive-discursive performativities of "school", "politics", and
the "media," we are led to a chilling conclusion: we are now
living through the disintegration of the cognitive-discursive
performativities associated with the biocultural niche of
modernity. As catastrophes go, this one--the disintegration of
the biocultural niche of modernity--is a whole order of magnitude
greater than the catastrophe known as the Great Depression of 1929-1941.
What
is happening now is beyond the cognitive scope of current
thought, which is economistic in character and Cartesian in its
metaphysical presuppositions.
Three problematics: the New Deal; Fascism; and the disintegration--in
the United States--of the biocultural niche of modernity. Each
problematic has its own background color in the text boxes.

The New Deal: the Keynesian Elite in the New Deal State
Fig. 1a, The Keynesian Elite in the New Deal state, is an organizational chart of the Roosevelt
administration circa 1936. This particular social formation
(TS+FF) emerged out of the Eastern Rate Case of 1910, played a critical
role in the industrial side of the conduct of the First World War (when
FDR, Frankfurter, and the Taylor society linked up), and became, as
Figure 1a indicates, the socio-technical infrastructure of the New Deal

The New Deal: the Lower Great Lakes Industrial Region
Figure 1b, The UAW-Unity Caucus, 1933-1943: Intersubjectivity, Shared
Intentionality, and the Extended Mind (Bildungsproletarians and
Plebeian Upstarts), is a map of sources. While I interviewed
veterans of the organizational struggle from the Conner Avenue area on
the far east side of Detroit (Briggs, Budd Wheel, Hudson, and Chrysler), and workers from Fleetwood, Ternstedt,
and Ford on the west side of the city, the most intensive work was done
with veterans of the organizational struggle on the near east side:
Michigan Steel Tube, Chrysler Highland Park, Murray Body, Dodge Main,
Midland Steel, Detroit Steel Products, Packard, and Plymouth, and with
veterans of the organizational struggle in Flint (Fisher 1, Chevrolet, and Buick) and Pontiac (Pontiac Motors, Yellow Cab).
What
made this whole site
possible is the literary and cognitive capabilities of the
bildungs-proletarians and plebeian upstarts whom I interviewed. These
bildungs-proletarians inhabited the biocultural niche of modernity. They were intensely rather that merely
literate. In
this regard they had more in common with the New Deal vanguard of
Figure 1a than they had with the “masses” of their fellow workers in
the plants. For this reason it was
possible to co-construct a discursive web incorporating all the
interviews that, in another context, could be referred to as the
extended mind of the Unity caucus.
It was these bildungs-proletarians around whom formed the action
networks of plebeian upstarts (the Unity Caucus) who created the modern
UAW in the 1930s. From the standpoint of praxis both the Unity
Caucus and the Keynesian elite should be conceived of as vanguard
formations within the biocultural field of Progressivism. Hence
the juxtaposition of Figures 1 and 2.
All of us historians who interviewed these workers back in the nineteen
seventies and eighties were not only struck by their powers of mind,
but also by what can only be described as their strength of
character. They were the embodiment of civic republicanism.

this is a raw and incomplete PDF that was the basis for
discussions between PF and RB that led to a series of
reconceptualizations, methodological as well as substantive. The
failure of much of local journalism to provide basic facts re.
employment (occupation and industry) led me to cut short my efforts
to do all 212 individuals that I was working with. As it turned
out, this was sufficient material to think about, analyze, and draw
conclusions from.

A close look at
the January 6 arrestees
A close look at
the January 6 arrestees reveals that, contrary to the respectable
media, which claimed that "the
angry crowd at the Capitol . . . seemed to come
not from the fringes of American society but from white picket-fence
Main Street backgrounds,"1 what is found instead is a  population in the process of
marginalization. The instability in their lives was manifested in
the difficulty of category formation. The standard occupational
and industry classifications 2 are inadequate, indeed
misleading. Gyms, bars, tatoo parlors, restaurants, salons, and
gun shops occur regularly in the entire dataset. To view the
individual owners of these establishments solely in terms of their role
as "shop owners" is misleading. What we are really dealing with
is social networks, not Cartesian selves. Very few if any of the
arrestees were connected to mainstream occupations and industries: none
in manufacturing, none in the building trades, none in the modern
corporate sector. They could be better characterized as grifters. This is a challenge to the neat concept of class.

Comment on A, B, and C
The
cognitive-discursive performativity of the workers on the Murray Body
spring committee reveals a high level of concrete operational
performativity. They were "on the job", dealing with the critical
issues of while evaluating the various managements the unionists had to
deal with. There is a high degree of intersubjective
coherence. This is entirely lacking in the Trump performances.
In
the meeting in the Tank Trump was never "on the job": he could not
function at all in the cognitive-discursive field of
geo-politics. Chapter 9 must be read carefully and in its
entirety. This is a foundational principle of this site: key
readings such as this, the Murray Body minutes, FDR's campaign speech
in Detroit and Henry Kraus's first-hand description of it, cannot be
absorbed into a homogeneous narrative.

Trump's Meeting in the Tank with the Joint Chiefs on July 20, 2017
Trump's
Meeting with the Joint Chiefs in the Tank on July 20, 2017 provides us
with a spectacular example--a performative tour-de-force--of this
accelerating disintegration of discursive and cognitive performativity. We have a detailed description of this meeting in A Very Stable Genius, chapter 9, "Shocking the Conscience."* A close reading of that chapter can be found here. The chapter in its entirety can be found here. The most striking aspects of the Tank meeting, as reported in A Very Stable Genius,
are the
primitive
cognitive performativity of president Trump, his brutish behavior
toward the Joint Chiefs, and the degree to which the Joint Chiefs were
flabergasted by this brutish stupidity. "He's a fucking moron",

speeches and the Murray Body minutes are discursive and cognitive
performances, as are Trump's speeches and meetings. The inner logic of these performances I refer to as performativities. The cognitive inner logic--the performativity--of FDR’s speeches is formal operational. The cognitive inner

Roosevelt's
trip through Michigan was one continuous triumph. In the auto
centers, where we were trying so hard to reanimate the workers, those
same workers put on spontaneous demonstrations of overwhelming enthusiasm. In Lansing, thirty five thousand came out to hear FDR speak from the rear platform of his train. Flint, with its pathetic UAW membershhip of 136, put more than a hundred thousand people along his path. In Pontiac, where we had no members at all,
there was a "tremendous gathering," according to the Detroit News of
October 15, 1936. It described the cheering crowds in the hub
city as rivaling the Armistice Day throngs, those at Lindbergh's visit
after his transatlantic flight, or the World Series Jamboree of
1935. The News
estimated the number of people lining the streets from Hamtramck to
Detroit at five hundred thousand. Frank Winn and I, who followed
the president's motorcade in the press section, doubled that figure.
There were
250,000 gathered in City Hall Square to hear Roosevelt's speech, to
hear him lashing the auto manufacturers for thinking only of their own
profits while ignoring the dire problems of their workers. They
roared their approval but they also listened intently,
as I did, for I could not fault a single word of what Roosevelt
said. I had never before had so convincing a political
experience. But beyond that certitude was my realization that the
UAW's fate was linked with FDR's victory, my conviction that success was
within our grasp.

The NY Times mentions while simultaneously concealing the essence of the matter, which is shown to the right.
The Times mentions the Future Forward PAC, but omits any reference at all to
the membership of this PAC: firms iin the vanguard of
Post-modern Capitalism: the Production of Subjectivities and Financialization of everything. Future Forward PAC is the latest addition to the club of strategic elites
striving for hegemony throughout American history. This club now
numbers five: the Slave Power (comodities in international trade); the Money Power (the Securities bloc, aka the Eastern Establishment of the GOP); the Mass Consumer sector
(the Keynesian elite); the globalizing manufacturing sector (Hiss list,
Democratic Leader Council, NAFTA); and, still emerging, and difficult
to chacterize, except to say that it is engaged in the production of
subjectivities and the further financialiation of everything. For
now, let's just call it the Future Forward sector.
Looking at
this sector from the standpoint of working class parents with small
children, the production of subjectivities and the stimulation of
desire has the effect of undermining cognitive development through the
degradation and almost complete destruction of the child's capacity to
focus the mind. Attention span is the great casualty of
post-modern capitalism.

Trump's Meeting with the Joint Chiefs in the Tank on July 20, 2017
provides us with a spectacular example--a performative
tour-de-force--of this accelerating disintegration of discursive and
cognitive performativity. We have a detailed description of this
meeting in A Very Stable Genius, chapter 9, "Shocking the
Conscience."* A close reading of that chapter can be found

most striking aspects of the Tank meeting, as reported in A Very Stable Genius,
are the primitive cognitive performativity of president Trump, his
brutish behavior toward the Joint Chiefs, and the degree to which the
Joint Chiefs were flabergasted by this brutish stupidity. "He's a

The narcissism in question is not only Trump’s. More important is that
of his followers, who idealise him as they once, in childhood,
idealised themselves. Beyond that, the demagogue has a special appeal
to wounded narcissism, to the feeling that one has failed to meet
standards one has set for oneself.
In Adorno’s
words, ‘the superman has to resemble the follower and appear as his
“enlargement”.’ The leader ‘completes’ the follower’s self-image. This
helps explain the phenomenon of the ‘great little man’, the ‘Aw
shucks’, ‘just folks’ demagogue like Huey Long. He ‘seems to be the
enlargement of the subject’s own personality, a collective projection
of himself, rather than an image of the father’ – a Trump, in other
words, rather than a Washington or Roosevelt.

maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if
it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away

We
proceed immanently, inductively, drawing from the dialogic unfoldings
the necessary concepts. Some of these--habitus, ressentiment,
bildung, übermenschen--are well-known. Nevertheless, they are not
merely applied to the interviews but renewed in the context of
reviewing the interviews. These interviews are not mere digital
files of transcripts, reminiscences of events of the 1930s spoken in
the mid-1970s. In reviewing them now [spring 2015] in the double
context of all I have read and experienced since then and all that has
happened in the world since then (the wreckage of socialism, the
persistence of fascism, and the triumph of nihilism) they come alive,
not as fixed objects, but as part of thinking now.
These interviews are a set of dialogic unfoldings that form a lens
through which to examine the ontologies and events, the transformations
and reactions, that are subsumed under the term unionization. The
factories, meeting halls, and neighborhoods of southeastern Michigan
are laboratories in which to investigate the play of forces: first, the
deep structures, the genetic ontologies (the principles of the
production of practices) that dominate the manifold areas of human
activity; and second, the irruption of forces of an entirely different
kind, referred to variously as bildung and the will to power--aufheben,
emergence, praxis, agency--these concepts are entangled in a common
vitalist sensibility. In this context the concept of the
übermensch is widely applicable to the understanding of Bolshevism in
Russia and the UAW in Michigan--and the Keynesian elite in the New Deal
state. Indeed, the more I read of Russian history* while
simultaneously digitalizing and listening to my 1970s interviews (while
having already internalized and made my own the discursive praxis of
the Keynesian Elite), the more apparent it is to me that what is called
bolshevism is a more generic (if short-lived) phenomenon of modern
times. Bear in mind Hobsbawm's concept of the short twentieth
century (1914-1991) defined as a chain of
events: ➞
But if we characterize the singular feature of this era as the inner
logic of the revolutionary process (rather than the outward chain of
events): bildung and the will to power, then the 1890s, when the
various Progressivisms emerged, is a likely beginning of the era, and
the defeat of bildung as historical praxis, in the Soviet Union in the
Great Purges of the 1930s (not the 1920s), and in the United States in
the Great Purges of the late 1940s and early 1950s, is the terminus.

on the production needs you would thin down the paint so that the coat
wouldn’t be too thick. If they needed the bodies fast, so you had
to put a thinner coat of paint on so that they would go through the
oven and dry fast. If you didn’t need the bodies you would
thicken the paint down to specifications. So I used to take the
viscosity of the paint—sounds important as hell, the average workers
don’t know what viscosity [is]; [it] sounds so technical. And hell all
I used to do was keep a finger under the bottom of the viscosity pail
(?) and fill it up and then take and put a level on it to see
that it was level and then remove the finger and with a stopwatch see
how long it takes for the paint to flow out. By that we would
know how much of the paint would flow off the body when it was being
poured on. Then you would take the temperature of the
ovens. Sounds very important. Hell, I was taught how to do
that within an hour of the time I was hired. Then they took three
days 43:25 to show me how to make up the reports, to cheat, so
that the Ford Motor Company, when it got its reports, the report would
show that they had the right thickness of the paint that the
specifications called for. But the thickness of the paint was
always based on how badly they needed the bodies. If Ford needed
the bodies they didn’t give a damn how much paint as long as you
covered it. So you see everybody made their job sound very
important, especially the leadership, the old militants like
myself and John Anderson 44:00

observed. The rapid, synchronized responses of the Madison Square
Garden crowd to FDR's punch lines (we know this because we have a
recording), can be contrasted with the crowd responses to Trump
rallies 90 years later. Trump's crowds await the punch line; but,
unlike the FDR cog-disc. perf., there is no chain of reasoning leading
up to the punch line. Trump is actually talkin' shit. There
is no chain of reasoning at all. The entirety of his rally

Human
culture, it needs be considered, is much older than human nature:
culture has been in existence for two million years or more, ten or
fifteen times longer than the modern human species, homo sapiens.
Respectable biological opinion has come around to seeing the human
brain as a social organ, evolving in the Pleistocene under the
“pressure” of maintaining a relatively extended, complex, and solidary
set of social relationships. This is to say that culture, which is
the condition of the possibility of this successful social
organization, thereby conditioned the possibilities of the human
organism, body and soul. The “pressure” was to become a cultural
animal, or, more precisely, to culturalize our animality. For two
million years, we have evolved biologically under cultural
selection. Not that we are or were “blank slates,” lacking any
inherent biological imperatives, only that what was uniquely selected
for in the genus homo was the ability to realize these imperatives in
the untold different ways that archaeology, history, and anthropology
have demonstrated. Biology became a determined determinant,
inasmuch as its necessities were mediated and organized symbolically.
What is most
pertinent to the relations between physis and nomos is not (for
example) that all cultures have sex but that all sex has culture.
sexual drives are variously expressed and repressed according to local
determinations of appropriate partners, occasions, times, places, and
bodily practices. We sublimate our generic sexuality in all kinds of
ways—including its transcendence in favor of the higher values of
celibacy, which also proves that in symbolic regimes there are more
compelling ways of achieving immortality than the inscrutable mystique
of the “selfish gene.”
As it is for sex,
so for other inherent needs, drives, or dispositions: nutritional,
aggressive, egoistic, sociable, compassionate—whatever they are, they
come under symbolic definition and thus cultural order. In the
occurrence, aggression or domination may take the behavioral form of,
say, the new Yorker’s response to “Have a nice day”—“don’t tell me what
to do!” We war on the playing fields of Eton, give battle
with swear words and insults, dominate with gifts that cannot be
reciprocated, or write scathing book reviews of academic adversaries.
Eskimos say gifts make slaves, as whips make dogs. But to think that,
or to think our proverbial opposite, that gifts make friends—a saying
that like the Eskimos’ goes against the grain of the prevailing
economy—requires that we are born with “watery souls,” waiting to
manifest our humanity for better or worse in the meaningful experiences
of a particular way of life.

The White Motor Company was an important scene in the development of
the UAW. Wyndham Mortimer, one of the if not the most important
organizer of the early UAW, worked for White Motor.
John Carmody, head of the Society of Industrial Engineers and active in
the Taylor Society, was active in Cleveland in the years following
WWI.
The Almangamated Clothing Workers were engaged in labor-management coooperation in Cleveland.
In this context it is interesting to compare Mortimer's insider account
of White Motor's progressive approach to labor relations with Henry
Kraus's outsider and ideologically driven characterization of of the

^We are now engulfed in is the implosion of neo-liberal "society." The
term "society" is bracketed because, in the conventional use of the
term, an ontological stability is implied, whereas in reality this
society is in the process of blowing its brains out, and that along
four axes of ontological catastrophe.
•First, the disintegration of the cognitive performativities of
modernity itself: the "human" side of "capital." (decognification,
disindividuation; Trump's rhetorical performances seen from the
standpoint of literacy and cognition as contingent not normative).
•Second, the explosion of fascist performativities within the orbit of
the GOP (Robert O. Paxton, Anatomy of Fascism: "The legitimation of
violence against a demonized internal enemy brings us close to the
heart of fascism.").
•Third, the patrimonial assault on rational-bureaucratic institutions,
an assault on the very idea of science-based professionalism and public
service.
Why does Trump get along so well with the alpha males of other
patrimonial regimes, especially Putin? Not simply because he is one of
them. The inner logic of such regimes--esp. in the case of Trump--is
the objective necessity to destroy the entire culture of science-based
administration in agency after agency as an existential
imperative. This is the significance of the demonic
shibboleth: "the deep state". In this regard Trump is more
radical than HItler. Hitler attempted to "coordinate" gleich thse
nsitutions; Trump is destroying them. (Trump's party has already
destroyed the non-affluent public schools already) This makes
Trump a more radical fascist than hitler.
In other words, while predation (sometimes the word "transactional" is
used) is the goal of individual actors in the trump orbit, at a deeper
level (where one might observe the immanent logic of patrimonialism as
"strategic" praxis the very existence of a science-based
rational-bureaucratic "state" poses an immediate threat to the nascent
patrimonial regime
•Fourth, the triumph of nihilism (or as it is known today, neoliberal
subjectivity). This nihilism is manifest in the victim culture of the
Democratic Party's appeal, which defines "self" not as citizen but as
consumer and victim. The New Deal's civic republicanism*** is

well as fundamentalist whites and blacks (and many working class
Catholics) have been disgorged from the project of modernity, and now
constitute, by twenty-first century standards, a barely literate mass,
concentrated in central cities, inner suburbs, small towns, and rural
areas, and removed in toto from the possibilities of cognitive
development implied by the term "education." (see Wolf below) This is
what we see at Trump rallies. As the old America dies a sociocultural
death, it is being replaced by newer populations capable, for now, of
cognitive development. The "White" portion of old America is Trump
territory.

^Trump is the apotheosis of the GOP's core performativities. In this
sense there is nothing new. But what is new with the Trump
campaign--and decisively so--is that a non-charismatic demagogue has
literally hijacked the base of the Republican Party. The genetic
ontology of ressentiment produces a subject. But that subject--the
Trump enthusiasts one sees at rallies and in interviews and focus
groups--has been embedded in the cultural-historical field of the
biocultural niche denoted by "white" supremacy (see The Imus Brouhaha
and that which is called "Racism"). The containment of white rage has
depended on two things. First, an economy of white affirmative action
guaranteeing great masses of "white" folk sole access to those sectors
of employment embedded in local government (police, fire, govt
administration, utilities, transportation, building services,
construction, and even manufacturing). And second, a semiotic regime of
ego-reinforcing symbols. When you add the election of Barak Obama to
the economic consequences of the regime of neoliberal globalization
(which includes declining wages as well as job losses) you add insult
to injury, and one gets a psycho-cultural crackup of world-historic
proportions. This is what Trump exploits.

(Mayer, Persistence of the Old Regime), together with newer firms in
the west and south and newly emergent crony capitalist formations
(Enron, World Com), and a whole new set of predatory financial
institutions played a critical role in the politicization of

The activity of these old and new elites, in aiding and abetting the
construction of the political structures of mass mobilization (Town
Hall meetings), is decisive in determining the political effectiveness
of anti-modern right wing movements, which otherwise might languish in
a populist stew of ineffectual rage. (Dallas 1963, Red Scare; Moore,
The War on Heresy) But they do not call into existence these ontologies
of ressentiment, of the right, of anti-modernism. They merely utilize
and shape them.
However, this utilization and shaping was mediated by the locally-based
GOP organizational apparatus, which itself was embedded in the
provincial cultures of town and county (new studies of KKK in north).
(Michael W. Miles, The Odyssey of the American Right, 1980; The Kansas
Experiment, New York Times August 5, 2015).) This laid the groundwork
for the radical shift to the right--e.g., the debt-ceiling crisis, in
which a loathsome babbittry of ambitious opportunists seized hold of
the Atwater-Lacan signifying chain and intensified its sado-sexual
character in a successful process of self-advancement in which the noun
primary became the verb to be primaried. This prepared the ground for
the next stage of this process of the mobilization of ressentiment: the
takeover of the so-called base (the herd animal of the right) by a
political outsider who in fact was and is perfectly suited to the task
he accomplished. Donald Trump seized the herd and led it in a rampage
over the political landscape. In so doing he and his relationship to
his herd (which once belonged to the GOP "establishment") embody a new
reality now being investigated by scholars: the patrimonialism of
highly developed post-modern societies (see links at the right.)

^RACISM
racism itself is a complex phenomenon involving (1) a specific genetic
ontology of the subject (ressentiment and the mechanisms of
defense--paranoid-schizoid position) embedded in (2) an associated
milieu (habitus—IMUS) resulting in (3) a metastable configuration of
cognitive and characterological performativity. That is, the term
racism, which in use is more of an epithet than a concept, points the
problematic of the emergence of specific ontological modalities and
their relationship to neighorhood, state, and media. (see
Bronfenbrenner diagram)POWER
The herd, psuedo-speciation, The ontologically indeterminate nature of
homo sapiens as cultural-historical primate, the historicity and
enormously complex variability of really existing humans, all of which
unfolds in the post-biological era (Dupre; Nietzsche).
This adaptive response is empirically and clinically developed in
psychoanalysis's concept of the mechanisms of defense. (And is one way
of thinking of eternal reccurence.)
The dramatic divergence in cognitive performativity, as seen in figure
1, between the United States and the modern nations included in the
PISA reports (among which the U.S. can no longer be counted*), is the
signal although unintended result of the enormous success of the Right
in undermining the very conditions for the development of modern,
educated citizens. The subversion of cognitive development in the
United States is the great achievement of the right-wing in America.

^BIOCULTURAL NICHE
I do not know to what extent this milti-dimensional enlightenment
continued in the nations of western Europe. Certainly it seems to have
weakened. But in the United States it has been virtually destroyed, as
the current state of public media, politics, and education will
testify. All the huffing and puffing about our educational crisis is
itself not merely a symptom of that decline; it is also an active force
driving that decline even further (Watch CNN and MSNBC to see what I
mean). One can say with confidence that the socio-cultural-political
forces key to the creation of modern minds, having developed over two
and a half centuries, can hardly be recovered by some blue ribbon
committee, the posturing of a Bill Gates, the demonization of teachers'
unions, the implementing of a punitive regime of testing, and the
predation of financial entrepreneurs in education. For the United
states, the enormous success of reaction in breaking the backbone of
the enlightenment as a cultural force BIOCULTURAL NICHE has just begun
to be felt. Figure 1 is prelude, a lagging indicator, of cognitive
decline.
Instead of a cognitively homogeneous citizenry, there is a
developmental divergence and fundamental differences in cognitive
functioning among different historically and sociologically defined
subgroups of the population. These subgroups can be defined by the
nature of their cognitive-linguistic practice, including inventories of
basic expressions and rhetorical maneuvers, such as are seen in the
Youtube videos of the Palin and McCain rallies, Tea Party protests, and
the mass of political ads produced for TV, as well as videos of talk
show interviews. (see theater of ressentiment) SEMIOSPHERE

^This rhetorical performance of the right is not only cognitively
primitive. It should be obvious that on the right there are not issues,
but postures, gestures, various encodings of the same sado-sexual
reflex (the inner logic, the generative matrix, of racism). Rage
enacted in the theater of violence that politics provides
(psychologically, the "issue" of immigration is the script for a
generalized lynch-mob): This is the essence of what is called
"Conservative" today. And not only rage, but political pornography. Sex
and violence make up the entirety of the inner logic, the generative
matrix, of populist Republicanism. These sado-sexual fixations may
dress themselves up as issues, as if they were subject to rational
debate and beholden to empirical checks (remember Willie Horton?).
Language on the threshold of gesture and reflex. Regression to
infantile narcissism via processes of identification, to a politics of
patrimonialism.

that, at a reduced scale, the mind of an ape can be upgraded by giving
him, on the one hand, a regime of socally controlled attention and
interactive experiences with humans, and on the other, a new, more
explicit form of representing the world, would confer dramatic support
to the Vygotskian notion that higher cognition can be created through
cultural processes of develoment that change the nature of cognitive

reprinted in Southern Politics in the 1990s with Atwater's name

it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away

obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more

previous stages of cognitive evolution. It still rests on the
same old primate brain capacity for episodic or event
knowledge.
But it has three additional, uniquely human layers: a mimetic layer, an
oral-linguistic layer, and an external-symbolic layer. The
minds
of individuals reflect these three ways of representing
reality.

Something about our mentality changed in the past few millenia,
something that made us able to construct such exotic things as
symphonies, philosophies, oil refineries, nuclear weapons, and
robots. Do such achievements have implications for theories
of
consciousness? Many would deny that they do. They
would
claim that the parameters of mind were surely fixed long ago, when we
emerged as a species, and that culture can add nothing to an equation
written deeply into the human genome.
But that common belief does not stand up to
scrutiny. The
human mind has been drastically changed by culture. In modern
culture, enculturation has become an even more formative influence on
mental development than it was in the past. This may be a
direct
reflection of brain plasticity, rather than genetic change, but that
does not in any way diminish the importance of the change from a purely
cognitive standpoint. The human mind is so plastic in the way
it
carries out its cognitive business, individually and in groups, that the
core configuration of skills that defines a mind actually varies
significantly as a function of different kinds of culture.
This
is especially true of the most conscious domains of mind, such as those
involved in formal thinking and representation.
Let me be very clear about what I mean here. I am not speaking of
trivial cultural changes, such as variations in custom or language
use. These are by far the most common and have no proven
cognitive impact. The most important of these is literacy.
Literacy skills change the functional organization of the brain and
deeply influence how individuals and communities of literate
individuals perform cognitive work. Mass literacy has triggered
two kinds of major cogitive reorganizations, one in individuals and the
other in groups.
To become fully literate, the individual must acquire a host of neural
demons that are completely absent from anyone who lacks literacy
training. This involves massive restructuring. There is no
equivalent in the preliterate mind to the circuits that hold the
complex neural components of a reading vocabulary or the elaborate
procedural habits of formal thinking. These are unnatural.
They have to be hammered in by decades of intensive schooling, which
changes the functional uses of certain brain circuits and rewire the
functional architecture of thought. This process can be very
extensive. Consider the impact of twenty or more years of schooling on
the brain of someone who has acquired full symbolic literacy in several
different
technical, mathematical, scientific, and musical fields. These
skills encumber neural resources on a vast scale and change how the
person's mind carries out its work.
